The classic IBC
aquaponics rig.
A pre-cut 275-gallon food-grade IBC is the most economical entry into aquaponics there is. We do the cutting, edge-rounding, and inlet plumbing so you can spend your weekend cycling the system instead of fighting an angle grinder.

The standard build
We take a triple-rinsed food-grade IBC and cut it horizontally about 12" from the top. The lower section (≈220 gal) becomes the fish tank; the inverted top section (≈45 gal) becomes a media grow bed that sits on the cage above the fish tank.
What we provide
- Pre-cut food-grade IBC, edges deburred and rounded
- Bulkhead fitting for grow-bed drain (siphon optional)
- Return-line bulkhead in the fish tank lid
- Replacement gasket on the discharge valve
What you provide
- Submersible pump (~250–400 GPH is the sweet spot)
- Grow media (expanded clay, lava rock, or net cups)
- Fish (tilapia, goldfish, koi — depends on climate & goals)
- Plants (leafy greens are easiest to start)
- Indoor or covered greenhouse space (these aren’t outdoor units in Wisconsin)
Why a cut IBC over a custom-built rig
A new aquaponics kit at this scale runs $700–$1,400. A repurposed IBC build is $180–$250. The food-grade plastic is identical. The cage doubles as the structural support for the grow bed and gives you mounting points for lighting, netting, and trellises.
Schools & ed programs
We’ve done discounted batches for several northeast Wisconsin schools and a vocational ag program at NWTC. Ask about classroom pricing and the build-day visit (one of our team will come help students assemble).
